Basics Crochet Stitches
If you are a beginner remember that all of crochet is made up of only three movements, combined in an infinite number of ways. It's the combination of wrapping your yarn over the hook, the location of where you put the hook, and exactly what you pull the hook through that creates every crochet stitch.

Chain stitch:
Almost every project begins by making a chain of stitches as a foundation for your crochet work.
When the symbol for a single chain stitch is linked with other chain stitches, they represent a chain. How to Chain stitch.

Slip stitch:
Abbreviated sl st
 A slip stitch symbol is very short and tight. Is the flattest of all the crochet stitches.  Although you can use the slip stitch to crochet a fabric, the slip stitch is mainly used to join 2 pieces of crochet together when working in rounds. How to Slip stitch.

Single crochet:
Abbreviated sc
The single crochet stitch is one of the next stitches that you should learn to make, after learning your basic chain. The height of a single crochet stitch equals the height of one chain.
They are great for beginners and in specialty patterns like Amigurumi, which are stuffed animals and dolls made using nothing but single crochet stitches. How to Single crochet.

Half double crochet:
Abbreviated hdc
The half double crochet falls in between a single crochet and a double crochet in height, but instead of working off two loops at a time, you draw the yarn through three loops on the hook. How to Half Double crochet.

Double crochet:
Abbreviated dc
The double crochet is about twice as tall as a single crochet. You can also combine the double crochet stitch with other stitches to produce many interesting patterns and textures. How to Double crochet.

Treble crochet:
Abbreviated tc
The treble crochet, also called a triple crochet, creates longer openings between the stitches. When you make triple crochet, it produces a very loose fabric.

Double treble crochet:
Abbreviated dtc
The double treble crochet creates a loose and holey fabric. Double treble crochet is commonly used in lacy designs.
Think of the double treble crochet stitch as being 3 yarn overs before starting the stitch.

Special stitches, such as clusters and shells, use a combination of these same stitches.

Crochet Symbols
Each stitch in the crochet pattern is represented by its symbol.

Variations: While the symbols may be stretched or skewed to imitate the shape of the crocheted piece, they retain their unique recognizable markings to enable you to identify the stitch. For instance, a double crochet always has a bar at the top of the stem and a small crosshatch on the stem:




Special stitches aren’t standardized and may have different definitions in each pattern that you encounter. For example, one pattern may define a shell as five double crochet stitches, but another pattern may define it as only three double crochet stitches. Before diving into a new project, be sure to check the beginning of the pattern’s instructions for the definition of each special stitch.
